| The pathway for impulses
from the periphery and body interior to the brain, and from the brain
to these areas, is the spinal cord. It therefore mediates complex
responses to sensations as well as an awareness of the external and
internal environments. In addition, it serves as a center for immediate
responses to receptor stimulation through reflexes within the cord.
Consisting of grey and white matter the spinal cord lies protected
within the spinal canal of the vertebral column, it's average length
is about 45cm.
