Hi, I am a 27 year old female that had no back pain prior to my pregnancy. My son is now 12 months old and my pain started in about the 16th week of my pregnancy. I started with sciatic pain in the right side only, then onto the left side, then into my lower back. By week 25 of my pregnancy I ended up with a walking frame as I was finding it very difficult to walk. For the last two months of my pregnacy I was in hospital most of the time as I simply could not stand on my feet. I had pain, tingling, burning all the way down both legs down to the feet. I had my son, able to walk but still in a great deal of pain. When my son was approx 6 weeks old I simply bent down, felt a click in my upper back and was not able to move for approx 4 days. Since that episode I have had pain in my upper back, pain in my writs, fingers and also tingling in my fingers, therefore my whole back is in a pretty bad way at the momement. I was sent the a neurologist who didn't find anything apart from lumbar discs being degenerate and central posterior anular tears at L4-5 and L5-S1 levels. I was then sent to a Orthopedic surgeon who said that the problem would require surgery but instead I was sent to attend a "Pilates Program". I have been attending Pilates for 6 months I feel a lot stronger and I dont shake in the legs as much but the pain still hasn't changed. I was recently sent to a doctor which is an Immunologist and a physician who sais that there is nothing wrong with my back and everybody in there 20's develop annular tears, he then gave me injections into the Sacro-iliac Joints which took some of the edge off but not enough. He also sais that everybody that's been telling me that my pain is coming from my back is wrong! So I am not sure what to do, I never had a back problem before but am in a great deal of pain now, I am so confused to what everyone is telling me!!!IP: Logged |

This is my opinion, I hope it helps. I suffer from back pain also. The pain that you have had with your back is not normal. What has helped me is a chiropractor, laying on my back with a pillow under my knees, SITTING WITH A BACK PILLO FOR ALIGNMENT, and ice-aid. The Back Pillo is my favorite because if I did not use it I would be in a lot of pain. Gaz mentions an exercise that my chiropractor has told me to do for my back which is laying on the floor and pulling your knees to your chest. The hardest thing for me to get adjusted to is trying to lift things properly and trying to limit twisting at the waist. Last week, I had to see my chiropractor as a walk-in and the chiropractor adjusted my vertebra, hips, and my legs. It honestly felt like a miracle had happened when the adjustments were done, because I thought that I would still be in pain. My back had felt better than it had for months. I gave up on pain medicine because even when I was taking the maximum prescribed by my doctor, it didn't help. The ice-aid did more than the medicine. I think the fact that because I had probably built up a tolerance to the pain medicine and the fact that the nerves are hard to treat for pain, the pain medicine doesn't help me. There are times when the ice and chiropractor aren't enough to alleviate the pain, they just make the pain more bearable for me. I asked around about the local doctors before I went to one. You need to find a doctor that understands what you are going through. Good luck.[This message has been edited by bama_turtle (edited 28 July 2001).] IP: Logged |

Hi Rosie, I'm a seventeen year old female suffering from an annular tear below my t12 and a compression fracture in that vertebra. I've also had the series of epidural injections and gone through every therapy that I had recommended to me. I would highly recommend seing a pain specialist if you are avoiding invasive surgery. Also, it may not seem logical but massage therapy has helped me to cope with the pain because the muscles take over the weight when your spine is not in good shape. This at least keeps your muscles in the condition to support your spine as well as they possibly can. I wish you luck in further treatment and if you would like to talk to another young person suffering from extreme back pain you can email me at DRAGONFLY_66@msn.com empathetically, Marlena Shipman

HOw is your back, Rosie? I was wondering: are u still in pain, or find anyone to help alleviate the problem. I don't think, "most people in their 20s have angular tear" is true. My opinion is 1) you have to find someone to help u with the pain. Try acupuncture, massage therapist, or other forms of therapy at least. 2) The pain most probably related to the birth of your child. Ask yourself, how is the weight of the baby relate to it, how is the mode of delivery...... 3) other people have problems already in their body, and many times, the problem "surface" during pregnancy, and delivery.(I was a registered midwife, I know about pregnancy in relation to health) IP: Logged |
